5/13/25 Josephine Baker TALK led by Becky StoneView Talk Recordings HereBabe Ruth TALK led by Tim Fehler - Articles handout

Plan to join us this summer as Chautauqua explores the nature and scope of celebrity in 20th century America. We have all heard of those who are only “famous for being famous,” but the Americans we will meet legitimately achieved their celebrity status through the creativity and excellence of their work.

  • From the blackboards of science: Albert Einstein portrayed by Larry Bounds.
  • From the early days of television: Lucille Ball portrayed by Leslie Goddard.
  • From the spotlights of the Paris stage: Josephine Baker portrayed by Becky Stone.
  • From the cheering crowds of baseball diamonds: Babe Ruth portrayed by Kevin Treu.
  • From the pages of America's newspapers: Erma Bombeck portrayed by Susan Marie Frontczak.

So mark your calendar and plan to join us for the fun of seeing history come to life and to explore the potential promises and problems of public acclaim.

Our Shows

Chautauqua is Interactive Theater. Our performances take you on an astonishing journey into the past — to laugh with Mark Twain — to dream with Martin Luther King, Jr. — to walk the Trail of Tears with the Cherokee — to wonder with Rachel Carson. You become an “eyewitness” to History. Chautauqua performers are part scholar and part actor. Fascinated by their characters for years, they can answer your questions in the character’s own words. Our programs reflect America’s diversity and feature compelling discussion. And it’s not a Chautauqua performance without audience participation. Prepare to meet some incredible people. Keep the questions coming and the conversation going!

Our Mission

Greenville Chautauqua aims to bring history to life through the use of compelling storytelling and interactive theater where discussion and audience participation stimulates critical thinking.
